Preface

Hebrew method of interpretation and the Pardes legend

Originating in the first century, the Jewish method of Biblical interpretation is called Pardes. It is accompanied by a legend which appears to be a warning by the ruling Jews against acknowledging that Jesus is the living Word, or living Torah of God.

Since they were worried about people seeing Christ in the scriptures using their method, shouldn't we, who wish to see Christ in the scriptures use their methods?

One thing is certain; modern Jewish leaders do not want their own people to see Christ in their own scriptures now any more than when Jesus confronted the leaders of his day saying:

Mt 23:13 ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in [yourselves], neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Ancient Pardes

The Jewish leaders learned to read the scriptures in such a way that they revealed Jesus as the Messiah from Jesus himself when he was 12 years old. (Lk 2:46,47)

During the next 18 years they perverted what Jesus had taught them so that when they obstructed his ministry, he called them liars, not merely misguided teachers. (Mt 12:34)

He taught the method to his disciples prior to his death. (Mt 16:21)

And he taught them again after his resurrection. (Mt 24:27)

Those he taught were commanded to teach others. (2Ti 2:2)

We should expect that the apostles taught us how to read the Old Testament Scriptures the way that Jesus taught them. Indeed the teachings of the apostles, when compared to Pardes, the Jewish method shows many similarities, the exception is that the apostles teach us to see Jesus in the Old Testament, while the Jews hide him.

6 And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.	Peter was between two guards, and bound by two chains.	Jesus was between two thieves, and bound by two horns. (The Ram was caught in the thicket.)
7 And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.	An angel attended Peter. A light shined in the prison. He arose quickly. His hands were unchained.	An angel was in the tomb. A light shined in the tomb. Jesus rose from the dead quickly. His works were unchained. (He could now be the High Priest)
8 And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.	Peter clothed himself. Peter put on his shoes.	Jesus picked up his works again. Jesus prepared to live on earth again.
9 And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.
10 When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.	Peter had three barriers: 2 sets of guards and a gate. The gate opened itself.	Jesus had three barriers: 2 days in the grave and the stone. The stone opened itself.
11 And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.
12 And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.	Peter went to see Mary first.	Jesus saw Mary first.
13 And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.
14 And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.	The woman ran to tell the disciples.	mary ran to tell the disciples.
15 And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.	The disciples told her she was crazy.	The disciples told her she was crazy.
16 But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.
17 But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.
18 Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.
19 And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.
