Primary metaphor
The Word of God revealed to man. As a prefix it means in because the Word of God has come into the world. It is the first letter of the alphabet, and as a prefix to reshit ראשית beginning is translated in. It could just as well be seen as the title to the book of Genesis A revelation to man and is read as such when the word is read 'by the letters'. [1]
Bet as revelation to man
ab אב
Father is first recognized in Ge 1:1 with the invisible aleph א and the bet ב as the first visible letter of the Bible. It suggests that from the beginning, no one has ever seen God. [2]
By the letters, father ab is God created the heavens and the earth א and revealed himself to man ב. This is the Father; the creator, the one and only God, the one who wants to be known by his creatures. It is NOT a baby name for God suggesting intimacy other than a one-sided intimacy from God to his own. It is the foundation of revelation. Every man knows this truth since it is embedded in his very being. [3]
ba בא
enter. With the reversal of letters comes a reversal of meaning. Father ab אב, the one who created and then came in, now enters ba בא his creation. The subtle difference is the first focuses on the Father, the second on the action.
bar בר
Son of God. The revelation to man ב is the Word of God ר. The word ineffable is used of God meaning that words cannot describe him. However, that which he wishes for his creation to know, can be described by words. It is the Son, the Word, which makes him known. [4]
Bar not only refers to the son, but as all metaphor, has many aspects by which it can be described.
- clean, pure describe the Son's holiness and goodness [5]
- corn, grain speak of the son having to die before he can be fruitful1 [6]
- field describes the Son who has his seed within him [7]
rob רב
abundance. With the reversal of letters the Only Son of God bar בר , becomes an abundance rob רב. The Son is 'fruitful and multiplying'. [8]
bara ברא
The bet and the meanings of bar retain their meaning as the word bara ברא , translated created is built. The Son of God בר created the heavens and the earth א. Bara also means separated. Creation happened when God made something separate from himself. Previously we said he created a void. But the Son of God was also separated from the Father as he was sent into the World.
Bara not only applies the aleph, meaning separation to the Son, but to all the aspects of the Son mentioned above.
- clean, pure where separated. For he who knew no sin was made to be sin...[9]
- corn, grain being separated describes Christ's death and burial.
- field being separated indicates those who are called according to his purpose and are ready for harvest.
abar אבר
fly. Notice that the aleph was place in front of the son bar instead of after as in the word create/separate. In Hebrew, with the reversal of letters comes a reversal of meaning. As the Son created, he was separated, he descended to earth. The reversal is that he returns. He flies. He is restored to God. Flying is used to describe the restoration of Israel to God when he brought them out of Egypt. [10] [11]
bohuw בהו
void, empty. Bohuw is the next occurrence of the bet. [12] The hei ה means 'not understood. The word for void is the revelation to man ב was not understood ה. The final vav makes the idea distinct more like a noun than an adjective.
hab הב
give. Reversing the letters of void bohuw בה into give hab הב. To the desolate, empty, void earth God gave his only begotten Son. [13] By the letters: "the teaching was not understood ה so God gave his revelation (the Word) to man ב. A vav on the front would merely mean and.
Secondary metaphor
The bet also represents the 'house' of the son. [14] The name of the letter bet ב sounds like the word for house. This meaning is consistent with the primary metaphor. Those who are the house of the son are filled with his word; the ones who received his revelation, and living water.
