:(43) His disciples said to him, "Who are you, that you should say these things to us?"
<Jesus said to them,> "You do not realize who I am from what I say to you, but you have become like the Jews, for they (either) love the tree and hate its fruit (or) love the fruit and hate the tree."

This saying originates from the dietary law:

:Le 11:3 Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, [and] cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.
:Le 11:4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: [as] the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he [is] unclean unto you.
:Le 11:5 And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he [is] unclean unto you.
:Le 11:6 And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he [is] unclean unto you.
:Le 11:7 And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he [is] unclean to you.

We eat the word of God... meditate (ruminate) upon it, and it creates the fruit of a holy (separated) walk. This is the clean animal.

The Pharisee had a walk that was separated (the appearance of holiness) which was not based upon the word of God, but upon their own self-righteousness.

The Scribe ruminated upon the word of God, but it did not produce in him the fruit of a holy walk.
