Let a guy publish a book, or give him a title and it greatly hinders his ability to discern truth. [1] The most common response from pastors and professors at Christian colleges, universities and seminaries is: "I haven't heard it before, it can't be true." If this were the basis of truth you could never learn anything.

The second is: "That's too silly to be the word of God." [2] This is not much different than thinking one is capable of judging God. It is the same folly as those who believe the universe is billions of years old when they say it looks old, since they have never had two universes side by side by which to discern what a young universe might look like. They make their own opinions the basis of truth.

I have even been told numerous times not to preach Christ from the Old Testament in such ways, since there is nothing hidden in scripture. They are simply on the wrong side of the discussion from the beginning.

God has said that not a jot (yod) or tittle (vav) [the dots and strokes of the letters of the alphabet] will pass away [3], until one knows why each jot and tittle is there, a complete understanding has not been derived. When one grasps the testimony of the mystery hidden from the beginning; when one hears the whispers of the Spirit revealing Christ therein, it produces a true humility before God.

Such humility is exemplified by one who listens to a matter [4] and based on scripture, tests all things to hold fast to those things which are good [5].

Consequence of lack of humility The scriptures are wrested or twisted to mean what you want them to mean.[6]
