The bet is a resh [[ר]] (revelation) that meets the lower horizontal bar of the square letter template at a right angle. The right angle means that the revelation was heard. In the dalet [[ד]] the right angle in the upper right corner meant that the word was spoken. The difference between the 'word' and the revelation' is the difference between the Torah and the Messiah. The Torah was the spoken word of God and the Messiah was the living Word of God.
