Mr 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins.
Mark claims that John is the messenger of Mr 1:2 by equating 'prepare the way before you' with preaching the baptism of repentance.
Mark uses Remez of ideas to equate the two. Malachi identifies the way which must be prepared:
Mal 2:17 Ye have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein have we wearied [him]? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil [is] good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where [is] the God of judgment?
MAlachi says that everyone is doing evil in the sight of the Lord, therefor preaching repentance seems like a reasonable action to take to prepare the way. Mark also understands the metaphor of water being the word of God. Repentance comes through immersion in the word of God.
Mark claims that John is the voice of Mr 1:3.
Mark uses Remez to join Mal 4:1 to Isa 40:3. Both verses speak of preparing the way of the Lord. This makes the messenger and the voice one.
