Genesis 38 Er
The overview of Ge 38 suggested that Er represents Adam. Using the methods of riddles and parallels taught by the NT authors, supporting evidence can be observed:
Er means 'awake' and it says he was 'called Er' or, using riddle, called awake. Consider that sleep is used to speak of death, and when someone is dead they have returned to dust. Therefore one who is called 'awake' is called alive from the dust. Adam was called alive from the dust when God formed him and breathed his spirit into him.
Er was killed because of sin. Adam brought sin, and through it, death into the world. Adam was killed because of sin.
Er was the first son of Judah, and Adam the first son of God.
It was expected that Adam would be fruitful and multiply, but because of his sin, all his children were born dead spiritually, and needing to be born again. We can say that Adam was fruitless and Er died fruitless.
How many people were saved in the Old Testament during their lives? This is important. None. They only received the promise of salvation. If Jesus had chosen not to face the cross, or had the days of his tribulation not been cut short as he was rushed to the cross, no flesh.. anytime, anywhere, ... would have been saved. (Mt 24:22)
If you have not received a new life in Christ, if he has not given you a desire to know him more, then consider that you may still be in the image of Adam. having a living body and a dead spirit.
