The gospels; accounts of the life of Jesus, were written in the order Mark, Matthew, Luke and then John. By comparing their understanding of the Old Testament, we can learn how their skill in reading the Old Testament improved with time, and from the differing skills, we can collect a set of skills that we can use.

We have already seen that each author pushed for an earlier start of the story of Christ. Each successive author adds material that the previous authors missed. Sometimes they choose not to address previous material, because the previous author handled it well. They were not in competition with each other, but as they became more proficient in "rightly dividing the word of truth" they wrote in order to pass that addition knowledge on to us.

John the Baptist

Mark had a simple understanding of John the Baptist as the forerunner to the Messiah:

Mr 1:2 As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
Mr 1:3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
