"However , the Jews at Jesus time spoke Aramaic, in which language there would not have been a double meaning."

Both Jesus and Nicodemas would speak Aramaic and Hebrew being fluent in reading the scripture. This would actually add more confusion, which, I think, is evidenced by Nicodemas's response.

The word 'עוד' in Aramaic means 'while'. Da 4:31 While [עוד] the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken; The kingdom is departed from thee.

The word 'עוד' in Hebrew means 'return, testify, protest, witness, record, etc', 'again, more, good while, longer, else, since...'

Jesus probably used 'עוד' saying "You must be born to again" (since this is what is explained in Greek) and Nicodemas heard it as "You must be born [to] return" Since he responded "can he enter the second time [return] into his mother’s womb,..."

However, Jesus may have intentionally used double entendre, saying "You must be born to testify":

Being born of the Spirit: The Spirit testifies.

Joh 15:26 ¶ But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

Ac 18:5 And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews [that] Jesus [was] Christ.

1Pe 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.
