Biblical hermeneutics is the study of the principles of interpretation concerning the books of the Bible. The principles and rules found here are derived from the Bible itself, either by using the rules themselves or by the examples of the Biblical authors. See Augustine's error for a criticism of the hermeneutic methods that were introduced to the church early in it's history.

The Biblical warrant for hermeneutics

Because eternal life comes from and through Jesus (Joh 14:6, Joh 17:3), one may be tempted to say that know Jesus, and therefor do not need to read or understand the Bible. But many who believed they knew Jesus will be turned away. (Mt 7:23)

Joh 5:39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Lu 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. Lu 24:32 And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? Lu 24:45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Ac 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures, Ac 18:24 ¶ And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, [and] mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. Ac 18:28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, [and that] publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ.

Ro 16:25 ¶ Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, Ro 16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

2Pe 1:19 ¶ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

2Pe 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

2Pe 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
