From Gleanings in Genesis by A. W. Pink. This entire book can be found on line at: http://www.pbministries.org/books/pink/Gleanings_Genesis/genesis.htm

Though Pink does well identifying parallels, he does not use sensus plenior. Lets see if SP reveals more.

Chapter 37

Ge 37:2
Jesus, being the fullness (7) of the messiah (10) was teaching Israel with his disciples; and he was with those who were troubled and only had a trickle (of the word?). And Jesus saw the evil around him.

1. Joseph was a shepherd (37:2); Jesus is the Great Shepherd (John 10).

2. Joseph was opposed to and exposed evil (37:2); Jesus did the same.

Now God loved Jesus more than all the others because he was the Son from ancient times (the Eternal Son). And he gave him works with many in the palm of his hand פס. And when he told them he was the Son of God, the beloved of the Father, they hated him and could not speak peaceably to him (they constantly challenged his teaching). (37:3-4)

3. Joseph was loved by the his father (37:3-4); Jesus was beloved by the Father.(Mat. 3:17; 17:5; John 10:17; Philippians 2:9)

4. Joseph was hated by his brothers (37:4); Jesus was hated by His brothers (John 1:11; Luke 19:14).

When Jesus told them of the prophecies they hated him even more. And he told them of the prophecy: Every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. (37:5-7
They accused him of blasphemy when he made himself to be the Son of God. (37:8)

5. Joseph was hated for his words (37:8); Jesus was hated for His words of truth. (John 7:7; 3:32)

He told that all power in heaven and earth was given to him. And they envied him. (37:9-11)

6. Joseph was promised a remarkable future (37:7-12); Jesus looked passed the cross to the joy set before Him (Isaiah 9:6, 7; Luke 1:31-33; Hebrews 12:2).

7. Joseph foretold of his future sovereignty (37:7-12); Jesus did the same. (Mat. 26:64)

8. Joseph was envied by his brothers (37:11); Jesus was envied by His. (Mat. 27:17-18)

His brethren were working with good intention (shoulder/Shechem) so his father sent him to earth (vale) among his associates (Hebron). (37:13-14)
And his brothers were lost (37:15-16)

9. Joseph was sent by his father to his brothers (37:13); Jesus was sent to the ‘lost sheep of Israel,’ by His father (John 4:34; 5:30; 6:38-40; 12:48-50; 17:21)

10. Joseph seeks out his brothers (37:14-17); Jesus sought out His (Luke 19:10)

11. Joseph seeks the welfare of his brothers (37:14); Jesus came not to condemn but that the world might be saved through Him. (John 3:17)

His brothers had received two teachings (Dothan - two wells) (they mixed God's word with their own) (37:17)

12. Joseph seeks his brothers until he finds them; Jesus seeks us until He finds us. And this at the initiative of the f(F)ather.

They started conspiring after Jesus had visited the temple, so that hey rejected him when he started his ministry. (37:18-19)

13. Joseph was conspired against (37:18); Jesus was also conspired against. (Mat. 12:14)

14. Joseph’s brothers did not believe his dreams (37:19, 29); Jesus’ brethren did not believe His words. (Mat. 27:39-43; John 3:18, 36)

Let us slay him and cast him into the grave. We will say a shouting (evil) living thing devoured him (they told the crowd to shout "Crucify him") (37:20)
The Son (Reuben) said that they did not know what they were doing, He would lay down his own life. He would be placed in the grave in total obedience (wilderness) and they did no work against him. He did this so that he could return to the father. (37:22)
They removed the works from Jesus, he was separated from those who were given to him, and died desolate. (37:22)

15. Joseph was stripped of his coat (37:23); Jesus was stripped of His coat. (Mat. 27:27, 28; John 19:23)

Jesus was thrown into the grave, and there was no water (the Word was gone/resurrected) (37:24)

16. Joseph was cast into a pit (37:24); Jesus was thrown into a grave.

They sat down for communion (to eat bread/the body of Christ) (37:25)
They looked up (to Christ) and God heard them (Ismaelites) according to his word (Gilead/rocky region) as the judge (camels) bearing brokenness (spicery) and a secret (myrrh) for the earth. (37:25)
The blood of Christ is not to be a secret (concealed). (37:26)
Let us make him acquainted (makkar:sell) to those who will hear (Ismaelites). And we can add no works (hand) to our brother. And they were content. (37:27)
Then men in strife (Midianites) passed by and the exalted Christ and made his resurrection known, and they made him known as the dual-natured Messiah (20) in the flesh (silver) and they brought Christ to the world. (37:28)

17. Joseph was taken out of the pit, alive in his body (37:28); Jesus was bodily-resurrected from the tomb (pit).

18. Joseph’s brothers mingled hypocrisy with their hatred (37:27); the Jews did the same with Jesus (Mat. 27:35, 36; John 18:28, 31)

19. Joseph is sold for the price of a slave(37:38); Jesus was sold for thirty pieces of silver (the price of a slave).

And the Son returned to the empty grave and he divided his works (clothes) [among his people] (37:29)

20. Judah suggested the idea of selling his brother (37:26-28); the Greek name for Judah is Judas (Mat. 1:2-3).

And they took Jesus's works and remembered (squeezed out/killed) small nuggets of the word (small rain) of his earthly teaching (goats) and works became alive (life is in the blood). (37:29)
And they offered the works of Christ back to the Father, and said that the shouting people have eaten his body which was torn for them. (37:33)

21. Joseph’s blood sprinkled coat (goat blood) is presented to his father (37:31); Jesus is our scapegoat and His blood was presented to the Father as a sin offering. (Leviticus 16:8-10)

Early childhood educators say that one does not really understand language until puns, word-play and riddles are understood. So approaching Ge 37 as a little child:

Ge 37:2 These [are] the generations of Jacob. Joseph, [being] seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad [was] with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.
Joseph = Jesus
7 = complete
10 = Messiah
feeding = teaching
flock = Ihis people
brethren = Jesus was incarnate, hence a brother
Bilhah = troubled
Zilpah = trickle (as opposed to flowing)

When Jesus came of age as the Messiah he was teaching his people with his brethren and was with those who were trouble and anly had a little teaching of the word.

Ge 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he [was] the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of [many] colours.
Israel = the Father
Joseph = Jesus
old age = ancient (eternity)
coat = works
colors = palms, parts, widths (of distinction)
