| There are many misunderstandings about the penalty and consequences of sin. This is because neither word exists in the Bible. The words used are 'vengeance' and 'recompense'. | |
| The Hebrew word for 'vengeance' נקם has the meaning of 'Christ arose' נ-קם. This suggests that vengeance was finished with his resurrection. The vengeance of God was consumed at the cross.
It also means 'the innocent finished the work' נק-ם. Remember that God told Adam that the day he ate the fruit, he would die; then the innocent lamb died in his place. Christ has died in our place. |

| The word 'recompense' includes judgements and rewards. The judge meets out justice; penalizing one, and rewarding the other. If Christ has taken the punishment, then we receive the reward in his place. The Son of God was made to be like us so that we would be made like him. He took the vengeance, we took the reward. |
