As the fourth son, God plays riddles to make him the second son. Levi was not to be numbered as one of the tribes. <ref>[[Nu 2:33]] But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses.</ref> And Simeon and Levi would be dispersed. <ref>[[Ge 49:5]] ¶ Simeon and Levi [are] brethren; instruments of cruelty [are in] their habitations. [[Ge 49:6]] O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they slew a man, and in their selfwill they digged down a wall. {digged … : or, houghed oxen} [[Ge 49:7]] Cursed [be] their anger, for [it was] fierce; and their wrath, for it was cruel: I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter them in Israel.</ref> With two of the first three sons out of the way, Judah becomes the second son.
