Rock
The claim is made that in typology, not every rock is Christ. This study will examine the claim of SP that every Rock must be the same symbol, though it may be expressed in variant forms.
The initial discussion came up while examining the rock that followed Israel in the desert. [1]
We do not consider the claim of some that the eternal word had limited himself to the size and shape of a rock, but that the author is referring to the Rock being a type of Christ.
The author makes the statement that the rock followed them, without giving a source for this. One plausible source is that he was using the methods of SP where the rock mentioned at the beginning of their journey [2] is the same rock mentioned at the end [3] by way of riddle.
They are the same rock because they are a rock, and every individual rock is the same rock by Derash.
That is the proposition being examined here. If every rock is a symbol of Christ, then we can assume the author used this method. If they are not all the same symbol, then another solution must be sought for the source of this teaching.

Rock that gave water is Christ
These verses all speak of the rock which gave water. Since they refer to the same literal rock, they must have the same meaning as a symbol of Christ. This first grouping are references at the time of the event.
- Ex 17:6 Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock <06697> in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock <06697>, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.
- Nu 20:8 Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock <05553> before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock <05553>: so thou s
- Nu 20:10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock <05553>, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock <05553>?
- Nu 20:11 And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock <05553> twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts [also].
The second group refer to the event after the fact. They refer to the same rock/s; the ones that gave water. It is interesting to observe the singular and plural forms of rock and stream/water.
- Ne 9:15 And gavest them bread from heaven for their hunger, and broughtest forth water מים for them out of the rock [craig] <05553> for their thirst, and promisedst them that they should go in to possess the land which thou hadst sworn to give them.
- Ps 78:15 He clave the rocks <06697 pl> in the wilderness, and gave them [to] drink as out of the great depths.
- Ps 78:16 He brought streams [pl] also out of the rock <05553 craig>, and caused waters to run down like rivers [fem pl].
- De 8:15 Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water מים out of the rock <06697> of flint;
- Ps 78:20 Behold, he smote the rock <06697>, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?
- Ps 105:41 He opened the rock <06697>, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river.
- Ps 114:8 Which turned the rock <06697> into a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.
- Isa 48:21 And they thirsted not when he led them through the deserts: he caused the waters to flow out of the rock <06697> for them: he clave the rock <06697> also, and the waters gushed out.
We observe multiple waters from a single rock and a single water from multiple rocks. This will be examined in a future study. There is no doubt they are all referring to the same event where we are told that the Rock is Christ.
God is our rock
These verses are direct references to God being our rock as a metaphor. Though they do not reference the event of providing water, the investigation is to see if all rocks represent the same thing. These direct statements are sufficient to make the point that the rock is a symbol for Christ our God.
