This is the primary metaphor of the alef. With the diagonal [[vav]], he spoke into the void dividing two creations, represented by the [[yud]]s. The [[vav]] is diagonal. If it were vertical it would only have divided time and eternity. A horizontal [[vav]] would only divide heaven and earth. Being diagonal, we are told that when God spoke creation into existence, part of creation existed in time, and part of it (one of the created heavens) outside of time.
The alef is the first letter of the alefbet it is also the number 1, but the the name alef means 1000.

The alef is a vowel. Vowels are pronounced with only breath. The alef is silent. From this we discern that when God spoke and created the heavens and the earth he did so in silence. There was no one there to hear it.
The rabbis ask why the scriptures start with the [[bet]]=OLD=created, the second letter of the alefbetI, rather than the [[alef]]. They only have riddlesreconciled (at end), not solutions. Solutions come from the scriptures. It is the first letter of the scripturesseparate, but it is not only silentholy, it is invisible.
