Re 1:2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.
Contents
John bore record of the Word of God.
When the disciples told people about Christ, they did not say "Come see this new thing in religion." They testified that the scriptures had been fulfilled. See Ac 17:10-12 Not only John testify that the scriptures were true, but that Jesus was the Word of God Joh 1:1. This work (Revelation) will also testify of all three things.
John bore record of the testimony of Jesus
The Gospel of John is that testimony.
John bore record of all things that he saw
In other places (and throughout sensus plenior) John uses seeing as a metaphor for understanding. His claim is that he is explaining what he has understood. We use the same metaphor without thinking about is: "Oh, I see!"
Mapping
This is the same John who wrote (1):
- 1Jo 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
- 1Jo 5:8 And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
