Heb 1:1 ¶ God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

I subscribe to an academic paper publishing service. One topic which apparently is a popular assignment is on the NT authors' use of OT scripture. There are a few dozen passages offered frequently in the conversation. It is the proliferation of these papers which keeps the subject of Sensus Plenior alive. It might be suggested that the diverse manners spoken of are not well-known.

The author of Hebrews suggests that there are diverse manners in which God had spoken to the prophets. Presumably, the NT authors were able to read those diverse manners and interpret them in light of Christ.

He 1:1

He 1:1¶ God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

Paul [1] defines the scope of his teaching as being the Old Testament. He will make the appeal from the Old Testament that Jesus is the Son of God; the promised messiah. As with the rest of the NT, we approach this book as though it was originally written in Hebrew for Jews who spoke Hebrew, but then was translated into Greek so that the Greek churches knew what was being taught in the Jewish churches.

Who were the prophets? The prophet is the teaching intermediary between God and man. Any person who receives a messages from God in any form, and passes it to another, is a prophet.

God, judge, God separated from man by ignorance אלהים God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, God is introduced as אלהים, or "God who is separated from man by ignorance" setting the theme of the book 'How God has made himself known'.
πολυμερῶς - πολύς many , μέρος part (lot or destiny), portion, coast, behalf, respect God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, "Many pre-ordained portions" In light of SP possibly refers to the careful attending of God to the written record.
πολυτρόπως - πολύς many, τρόπος manner of life, character, deportment God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, God used the 'manner of life' and 'character' of OT people to paint the pictures of Christ.

Enumeration of prophets The criteria used to define a prophet is the receipt of a message from God which is passed to another. We expect that the message pertains to Christ.

λαλέω to utter a voice or emit a sound, to use the tongue or the faculty of speech, to utter articulate sounds God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Jesus said that they have never seen nor heard the Father אב. [2] yet the word used here implies the articulation of sounds. 'God' suggests something different than 'the father' [3], or 'spake' is used metaphorically, or he used the proxy of prophets to speak to the fathers.
πάλαι - long ago, in former times God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Presumably to Adam through Malachi.

God spoke to the fathers BY the prophets. This highlights the meaning of 'prophet' as the one who is the intermediary between God and man; he speaks what God wishes him to speak. The prophet is the intermediary between man and God; making intercession on behalf of man.

Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Paul uses a word with 'author and finisher' in it's formation then gives a bookend in He 12:2

The word also has in it's formation 'covenant for a separated life'. It may be argued that this is the theme of the book. The Hebrews were Jews who were being persecuted and thrown out of their institutional accoutrements. Paul is saying "Don't worry... they were only symbols. Christ is the real thing. You have been called to a separated life".
