Jacob is Israel
Jacob is Israel not merely because God changed his name [1]; but because the man had been joined to God by revelation. [2]
- Jacob had two significant encounters with God. The first was in a dream concerning Jacob's ladder. [3] Though he had given Jacob a sign that the dream was true [4], God gave him a second encounter where he lost everything, but was blessed through it [5]; to confirm his first encounter.
- ↑ Ge 35:10 And God said unto him, Thy name [is] Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel.
- ↑ Ge 32:28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. [{Israel: that is, A prince of God }]
- ↑ Ge 28:12 And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
- ↑ Many stones become one
- ↑ Ge 32:20 And say ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob [is] behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept of me. [{of me: Heb. my face }]
