To see things which were not plain

As a boy, Jesus taught in the temple, where the teachers listening were astonished. [1] Were they astonished that he understood, at such a young age, the things that they took years to understand? Or were they astonished at the new things he taught them? It is suggested that they were astonished at his new teaching with authority.

There are at least five scriptural evidences that he did not teach what they already knew.

Rulers called liars

John the Baptist was the cousin of Jesus and had an instinctive spirit-led connection to Jesus. [2] [3] When the religious rulers approached him to be baptized, he called them liars. [4] [5] His knowledge of their character was not given to him in a vacuum. He was raised among them. Their hypocrisy betrayed them. Their teaching did not ring true. Whatever Jesus taught in the temple eighteen years prior, had been perverted. Their teaching did not reflect the teaching of Jesus.

Spoke with authority

When the religious rulers taught, they quoted the teaching of their teachers. They debated each other, one school against the other, ever increasing the tomes of religious opinion concerning the scripture. When Jesus taught, he taught with authority [6] [7]

They marveled at the teaching of Jesus because he had not been taught. Many scholars take the position that Jesus must have been under the tutelage of a a rabbi; some suggesting even that of John the Baptist. The latter is nonsensical since John was only a few months older than Jesus. But Jesus said that his training was from God. [8] [9]

Disciples did not understand

The disciples were raised Jewish and knew the scriptures as taught by the rabbis, but they did not understand the teaching of Jesus. [10] This indicates that the teaching was different from theirs.

Confrontation displayed different teaching

Jesus accused the religious leaders of ignorance of the scriptures [11] [12], which he would not have done if they were teaching the same thing.

Paul says the mystery was revealed

If the mystery was revealed, as Paul says [13] [14] [15] [16], then it must have been hidden. This suggests that the teaching of Jesus was different from that of the religious leaders.
