Pastors who say they are expository preachers, often simply tell you what everyone else has said about a verse, including free-for-all allegory to interpret parables, and leave it to the hearer to decide what to believe.
And frankly, even well-intentioned Christians read over poetic and eschatological texts not really understanding them, but are content with a good feeling that they at least have read them.
Often there are things in the text which should cause the Christian to wonder and dig deeper, but few search for answers. When was the last time you heard a lesson on Emmanuel being a completely different name than Yeshua? How does Yeshua fulfill the prophecy he would be named Emmanuel? Most are content to simply believe it, rather than to search for why it is true.
